How a picture gets lighter

Three things happen, in this order. None of them changes what you see.

  1. 1

    Hidden data goes first

Camera model, location, editing history. You never see it, but it can weigh more than a small photo.

  2. 2

    Detail your eye can't see

The picture is read in tiny 8 × 8 squares. Inside each one, the finest flicker of colour is simplified.

  3. 3

Colours that look alike become one

A picture can carry millions of colours. A few hundred well-chosen ones look exactly the same.

Three ways to compress

Most people never need more than the first. The other two are there when the file has a job to do.

Smaller

Removes the detail your eye doesn't notice. Right for photos, thumbnails and anything going on the web.

60–90%smaller, usually

Exact

Keeps every pixel as it was. Only the hidden data goes and the file is packed tighter. For logos, artwork and anything you'll edit again.

5–30%smaller

Custom

Choose the quality yourself, or tell it the size the file has to fit, like YouTube's 2 MB limit for thumbnails.

Making a YouTube thumbnail? Save it as JPG or PNG under 2 MB. YouTube doesn't accept AVIF. Pick "Under 2 MB" and the compressor finds the best quality that fits.

Your pictures stay with you

Most compressors upload your images to their servers. This one does all the work inside your browser, so there's nothing to upload, nothing to wait for and nothing kept anywhere.

  • Nothing is uploadedClient photos, unreleased artwork and personal pictures never leave your computer.
  • No daily limitDrop one image or two hundred. There's no counter and no account.
  • FastNo upload or download wait. Your own computer does the work.
